After a gripping season, Leicester Tigers have triumphantly claimed the Gallagher Premiership champion title after beating Saracens in the epic final held at Twickenham on Saturday 18th June.
Having been defeated by Saracens the last time the two elite clubs faced each other in the 2010-2011 season premiership final, Leicester Tigers finally had the chance to redeem themselves and claim the title of the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Champions.
Kicking off at 3pm on Saturday in the ‘home of rugby’ Twickenham stadium in London, the highly awaited final of the Gallagher Premiership 2021-22 season had crowds roaring and ready, the atmosphere thrumming with excitement and anticipation.
Finally, the match kicked off in a frenzy and blur of movement, with Saracens securing the first 3 points of the game not 5 minutes in. With both clubs testing the others defences and looking for territory until finally, Tigers pushed forward and Hanro Liebenberg carried the ball over the line and scored the first try of the game, with Freddie Burns quickly adding two additional points for an excellent conversion. The victory was short lived though as Saracens won a penalty and added three points, closing the gap between the teams on the scoreboard. As anticipation builds before the game is called for half-time, the teams look for any signs of weakness. Stealing a chance, Tigers played the ball fast with Jasper Wiese snatching a try as he carried the ball over the line. Half-time is called, revealing Tigers inching ahead of Saracens with the scoreboard showing 12 - 6.
Called into play by the whistle, the second half proves that there will be no easy defeat for Tigers as Saracens repeatedly attempt to attack and push deep into the Tigers side. Saracens' determination pays off and they win a penalty, gaining 3 points. Less than 10 minutes later, they secured another 3 points to equalise with Tigers. With all the play for, it seemed that the match could go either way. Not to be defeated, not with their chance at victory so close, Tigers use all their strength to push deep inside the Saracens side, with Freddie Burns taking an exceptional shot at the drop goal and winning them 3 more points, propelling Tigers into the lead. With less than 7 minutes remaining, Tiger’s held their side well until finally, the whistle rang, the scoreboard showed the final total of 15 - 12 and Leicester Tigers were triumphantly named the new champions.
